The Simplest Way for Freelancers to Generate Leads
Marketing might not be your favorite part of freelancing or running a business — but it’s not going anywhere. So let me show you the simplest way to create a steady stream of leads to your business!
If you’re a freelancer who needs to generate more leads for your business, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by complicated strategies and techniques. But don’t worry, because I'm sharing THE simplest solution to help you book more clients.
Lead generation doesn’t have to be scary. It’s just a tool for increasing visibility so your services so potential new clients can actually see your services. So let’s get to it — I’m about to introduce you to the most straightforward and effective way to generate leads for your freelance business.
By implementing this approach, you can attract potential clients and expand your business without the need for extensive marketing knowledge or expensive tools. So, if you're ready to take your freelancing career to the next level, let's dive in and discover the simplest way to generate leads for your freelance business.
Here’s how to create a successful lead generation strategy asap:
#1 → Start with a product or service that’s AMAZING.
Before you map out any kind of marketing plan, make sure your product or service solves a REAL problem that people are willing to pay money to solve. Once you identify ONE problem you can solve for your clients - you can share that solution in your marketing and outreach.
Let’s say you’re a web designer… you don’t need to talk about your fancy skills, top of the line tools, or years of experience (not yet, anyway). Start by showing leads how your websites help clients make more money. Keep it simple and solution-oriented!
Tip: The more you can position your service as a NEED, the easier it will be to sell. Figure out how you can help people:
feel better
make money
save money
save time
ease frustration
or improve their life in some way!
#2 → Choose ONE platform and show up consistently.
The best way to get overwhelmed and stuck with your marketing plan? Copying a strategy from someone with a much different (larger) business plan than yours.
If your freelance revenue goal is $5k/month, you only need to sell your $1000 service 5 times each month. I promise you don’t need to spend HOURS creating content plans for Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok… just to sign 5 clients each month.
Pick one platform and get really good at it. Show up and talk about who you are, what you do, and how you can help. Don’t overthink it!
#3 → Make connections!
I cannot stress this enough. Yes, you have an amazing product (or service) and yes it’s probably great at solving problems… but newsflash: The internet is huge. I guarantee you someone else can solve that problem in their own way. Which means the deciding factor for a buyer is almost always– YOU.
You don’t have to dedicate your life to building a personal brand on social media, but you do have to dedicate some time to building connections and proving your credibility.
Sometimes this looking like good old fashioned networking. Reaching out and making the first move is a sure way to increase connections!
#4 → Outsource that shit.
Giving up some control and letting someone else help you grow your business is scary, ok normal even). But doing everything yourself is a 1-way ticket to burnout, which I can tell you from experience you do not want.
If you like doing your own marketing – great! Find someone else to manage your inbox, admin, design, bookkeeping, etc... If you actually hate the idea of marketing your business – you guess it. Outsource that shit!
The truth is, someone out there LOVES marketing for creative business owners and freelancers, and that person could take this whole thing off your plate so you can focus on the things you love doing.
#5 → Get to know your Dream Client.
“Everyone can use this service.”
“My ideal client is anyone who wants to buy from me.”
Sound familiar?
I get these responses a LOT when I ask freelancers about their Dream Client… and (no offense) my response is always: “wrong” and “wrong”.
Trying to reach everybody is the best way to reach NOBODY. Take the time to figure out WHO you’re talking to… that way you can understand what they’re looking for.
I dedicated a whole bonus section to this in my Booking Magic Templates, because I believe it’s that important! The Dream Client workbook helps you identify your ideal clients so you can tailor your messaging to them.
#6 → Don’t be boring.
Copying other people is the fastest way to approach lead generation. Copy, paste, send and you’re done.
But guess what? It’s boring and your clients can see straight through it.
Templates are a great place to start. Use someone else’s proven strategy, but take the time to make it your own. Add your own personality, experiences, and unique perspective to your outreach emails and you’ll notice a huge increase in responses.
So, what do you think? Sounds reasonable, right? You can start implementing these 6 steps right now and start adding a steady stream of qualified leads to your freelance business!
